Virgin Gorda Weather

The British Virgin Islands has typical Caribbean weather with the highs in the 80s all year round. Virgin Gorda is warm and almost always sunny. The summer is more humid with rain showers typically followed by bright sunshine. Hurricane season is formally June to November with greater risk of a serious storm in September and October when the Caribbean Sea is warmest.

There is an airport on Virgin Gorda (VIJ) but this serves mostly charter air services and most villa clients will fly to St Thomas (STT) and take the ferry to Virgin Gorda.

Virgin Gorda Time Zone

During the winter Virgin Gorda is an hour ahead of the eastern seaboard of the US and during the summer Virgin Gorda time is the same as the eastern seaboard of the US.

Virgin Gorda Entry Requirements

Both US and Canadian nationals need a valid passport for entry. Visitors of other nationalities should contact their local BVI Tourist office to see what is required of them. We are happy to help with any questions that you have.

Virgin Gorda Airports

There is a small airport (VIJ) on Virgin Gorda, which only serves charter flights and short hops from other Caribbean islands. Most visitors come by ferry from St Thomas or Tortola.

Virgin Gorda Arrival, Meet and Greet

Your arrival meet and greet will depend on your point of arrival and where you are staying. Clients who are renting Mahoe Bay villas who arrive in Spanish Town by ferry or air will be met at the point of arrival by our representative and the car rental representative. Clients coming to a villa in Leverick Bay arriving in Spanish Town will make their own way to the Leverick Bay office in a rental car or a taxi. Clients for Leverick Bay villas arriving at the Leverick ferry dock will be greeted at the dock. We will give you full details when handling your Travel Request Form a couple of months before your date of travel.

Virgin Gorda Beaches

It is said (by some) that Virgin Gorda has the best beaches in the whole Caribbean. If you enjoy snorkeling, you will love the living reefs at Mahoe Bay. The Baths are very special with pools created from the sandy shore and the large granite boulders. There are other wonderful beaches all over the island including Spring Bay, Savannah Beach, Devil’s Bay and Leverick Bay.

There are lots of good restaurants on Virgin Gorda. Here are a few of different types to chose from. Sip & Dip Grill, Mine Shaft Café, Top of the Baths, Mad Dog’s and the Biras Creek Resort.

Virgin Gorda Food and Wine Shopping

Some Virgin Gorda visitors buy their food and wine on Tortola and bring it back to the island by ferry. There is food shopping on Virgin Gorda and here are three food stores for you to choose from. Chef’s Pantry, Buck’s Food Market, and the Wine Cellar.

There are interesting gifts and souvenirs that you can buy to remember your trip to
Virgin Gorda. Two good choices are The Palm Tree Gallery and Pusser’s Company Store.

Virgin Gorda Attractions

Most of your time will be spent in the sea or in the pool, but there are other things to do on land in Virgin Gorda. You can go hiking in the National Park and even visit the Virgin Gorda Peak. Separately you can see very large iguanas if you visit the walking trail at Biras Creek.

Virgin Gorda Water Sports

Virgin Gorda has every water sport that you can possibly imagine. The snorkeling and diving are particularly good. Seeing the marine life which is growing all over the sunken wrecked vessel Chikuzen is a very special experience. There is day sailing of all types, boat rental and fishing.

Virgin Gorda Money, Credit Cards and Banks

Virgin Gorda in common with the rest of the BVI uses the US dollar as its currency.

Credit cards are accepted in most businesses and restaurants on Virgin Gorda. Some small bars do not accept cards, so check before you sit down. Let your credit card companies know before departure that charges will be made on your cards overseas.

Virgin Gorda Airport Departure Tax

Visitors departing by ferry will pay a $5 departure tax. The tax for departures by air is $20.


Virgin Gorda Dress Code

Virgin Gorda is very casual, so dress accordingly. Please remember though that bathing suits should not be worn anywhere except the beach. Please also be advised that this island does not allow nudity (except in private) and bathing suits must be worn on the beach.

The tap water on Virgin Gorda is safe to drink. The water comes mostly from desalinization.

Electricity is the same as in the US 110 volts.

English is the official language of Virgin Gorda.

Virgin Gorda is a predominantly Christian island with several different denominations actively worshipping here. Visitors are always made very welcome.

Tipping is the same as in the US. Some restaurants will add a service charge to the bill, but mostly the customer will decide whether to tip and how much to tip. 15% is usually correct for good service.
